This song, one of my all-time favourites, was written and first released in 1971 by Alex Harvey, a country & western singer. A year later, Tanya Tucker’s version was a Top Ten Country Hit. It became a Number 1 hit for Helen Reddy in 1973. Two days after Reddy’s release of the song, Bette Midler gave us her bluesy version on her great LP, “The Divine Miss M”. Midler’s is my favourite version of all, but Reddy’s excellent interpretation is more easily adapted to the strumstick. Please google Midler’s version and listen to it as well.
