We Shall Overcome (Merlin)

A gospel song which later became a protest song and the anthem of the American civil rights movement. It dates from the early 1900’s when it was pure gospel, but it was sung as a protest song by striking tobacco workers in the 1940’s. It has sung frequently since, most notably by Mahalia Jackson, Pete Seeger and Joan Baez. It is now associated with protest movement world-wide.
