Fernando (Merlin)

I thought for a long time that this was a love song. It’s not. Listen to the lyrics. The singer is an old man sitting with his friend, Fernando, and remembering the Mexican Revolution (1910 -17) when they fought as Freedom fighters. He recalls the elation and terror they both felt on the eve of their first battle “Do you recall the frightful night we crossed the Rio Grande?  I can see it in your eyes, how proud you were to fight for freedom in this land. There was something in the air that night. The stars were bright, Fernando. They were shining there for you and me, for liberty, Fernando.”
