Based on an old folk song of Scottish origin, this lovely piece is also sometimes known as “O Waly, Waly”. The lyrics go back as far as the 1600’s and there are many different versions of them. An modern Irish song , “Carrickfergus” incorporates some of its lyrics and an American version was popularized by Pete Seeger during the folk revival.
