No one knows exactly the origin of this haunting lullaby. Currently its best known version is that sung by Allison Krauss, Emmylou Harris and Gillian Welch on the soundtrack of “O Brother, Where Art thou”. It appears to be a southern song born out of the anguish of slavery and a broken home.
