An American folk song written by Elizabeth Cotton when she was only 14 years old. Cotton, a one-time nanny for Peggy Seeger, wrote it sometime between 1906 and 1912. She was inspired by the sound of trains rolling on the tracks near her home in North Carolina. There are a number of versions of this song by various artists with slightly different lyrics.
