Ralph Vaughn Williams heard an English folk song, “Kingsfold” which is thought to date back to the middle ages. He introduced it as a hymn tune in The English Hymnal in 1906 as a setting for Horatio Bonar’s hymn “I Heard The Voice of Jesus Say”.
The tune has been set to a variety of texts in England and Ireland. Look for a jaunty Irish song entitled “The Star of County Down” on this site.
